The Western Australian Universities Foundation Program (WAUFP) is a one year course of academic study for entry to the four public universities in Western Australia. The Program is designed for international students who do not have a strong English language background and whose matriculation level is not sufficient for entry into Western Australian Universities. The program commenced in 1993 and it runs from February to November.

Fast Track WAUFP is a 6 month course of academic study for entry to the four public universities in Western Australia. The course is designed for better than average international students who have met academic background requirements of university entrance. It aims to give the students an opportunity to experience teaching and learning in the English language medium and to provide them with the opportunity to remedy any deficiencies in their academic background. The program commenced in 1999 and is offered by Tuart College. It runs from August to mid December.

What is the WAUFP?

The WAUFP is a parallel program to the Western Australian Tertiary Entrance Examinations (TEE). Students are required to study at least three subjects from the list below. These subjects follow the TEE syllabuses. For further information on each subject visit the Curriculum Council of Western Australia.

  • Accounting
  • Applicable Mathematics
  • Calculus
  • Chemistry
  • Discrete Mathematics
  • Economics
  • History
  • Human Biology
  • Information Systems
  • Physical Science
  • Physics

All students are required to study English Language and Australian Cultural Studies (ELACS). This is a specially developed course designed for international students. It is the only compulsory subject in the program and the time spent teaching it is double that of other subjects. Students must score a mark of at least 50 in ELACS to meet the English competency requirement of the 4 public universities in Western Australia and therefore to be eligible for university entrance.

Students do not sit the TEE examinations, but are required to sit separate WAUFP examinations. These examinations aim to be of the same level of difficulty as the TEE but they are sensitive to the fact that English is the student’s second language.

Colleges assess each student’s performance in each subject throughout the program. This internal assessment counts for 50% of the final mark. The other 50% comes from the final subject examinations.

Students are required to study English Language and Australian Cultural Studies (ELACS) plus at least three subjects from the list below:

  • Accounting
  • Applicable Mathematics
  • Calculus
  • Chemistry
  • Economics

How well must you do to gain a place at University?

For admission to a public university in Western Australia, students are required to score a minimum of 50 in ELACS, and achieve an appropriate Combined Percentage Score (CPS). The CPS is calculated by averaging a student’s best three subject scores (excluding ELACS). Provided a student achieves a minimum score of 50 in ELACS and the required CPS for that course they are guaranteed a place in that course. A few courses have additional entry requirements such as tests, portfolios and interviews.

The CPS requirements vary for different universities and different courses. For example, the minimum CPS required for 2008 entry into Commerce or Business is as follows:

  • Curtin University (Commerce) requires 56
  • Edith Cowan University (Business) requires 50
  • Murdoch University (Commerce) requires 54
  • The University of Western Australia (Commerce) requires 61

To gain university admission in 2008 the CPS required range is from 50 to 80 depending on the course and the university.
