Introduction
Discovery consists of seeing what everybody has seen - and thinking what nobody has thought. (Albert Szent-Gyorgyi - biochemist, physiologist and Nobel Prize winner) Murdoch University is looking for explorers - explorers who want to take a voyage of discovery and, along the way, discover more about themselves, their chosen areas of interest and the challenging worlds of knowledge and research. Murdoch is a place where free thinking is welcomed and encouraged - a university that takes a genuine interest in its students, and wants you to succeed. Murdoch students quickly develop the ability to think imaginatively, independently and critically. It’s a modern, dynamic campus with a true Australian feel. We have a well-deserved reputation for good teaching, exciting research and satisfied students. Murdoch’s main campus is just 15 minutes south of Perth. We also have campuses in Rockingham and the Peel region. These are home to over 14,000 students and 1,400 staff – and where around 3,000 overseas students from 80 countries have chosen to further their education. Here are a few of the reasons why. In an independent, national survey of Australia’s public universities, graduates ranked us amongst the very best. In the 2008 Good Universities Guide, Murdoch is the only Australian university to win a five-star rating for graduate satisfaction - twelve times in the past 13 years. We’re also one of the leading research universities in Australia; in the same survey we are ranked in the top eight for research intensivity. Murdoch offers a broad range of courses - taught by enthusiastic and well-qualified academic staff. Choose from the sciences, veterinary medicine and our degree in chiropractic science, or explore the areas of business, engineering, the humanities, communications, marketing and the media, education, social sciences, law and information technology. Our degree courses are flexible, so you can broaden your qualifications (and your choice of careers) by taking a double major. Our admissions policy also means that we’re happy to help students from non-traditional academic backgrounds qualify for our courses. We work closely with the community, government, industry and business in exciting and important national and international research projects. Our research teams are currently exploring – and discovering – in the areas of agricultural and veterinary biotechnology, interactive media, environmental science and contemporary Asia. They’re attracting both Commonwealth and external funding. And our WA State Agricultural Biotechnology Centre and the Interactive Television Research Institute are involved in research and technology transfer on a global scale. Murdoch’s 2009 undergraduate prospectus has been sent to all WA Year 12 schoolleavers via their school. This guide has information on our courses and admission requirements. If you do not have our prospectus or you’d like to know more, contact our Prospective Students’ and Admissions Centre on 1300 MURDOCH, or visit www.murdoch.edu.au. |

Admission Requirements
The University welcomes applications from both school leavers and non-school leaver applicants.
School Leaver Requirements
The requirements for Western Australian school leavers are outlined in the Summary of Undergraduate Admission Requirements for School Leavers.
School leavers from interstate must have met the requirements for entry to a university in their own State and obtained a rank or aggregate which converts to the appropriate Tertiary Entrance Rank for admission to the course of their choice. This rank or aggregate is valid for entry for a period of ten (10) years.
School Leavers from overseas are also welcome to apply to Murdoch University. If there are any doubts about eligibility for admissions to the University, please contact the Prospective Students' and Admissions Centre.
Non-School Leaver Requirements
The requirements for non-school leaver applicants are outlined in the Summary of Undergraduate Admission Requirements for Mature Age Applicants.
Non-School Leaver Applicants with Postsecondary/Tertiary Studies
Applicants who have completed a TAFE Certificate Level IV, Diploma, or Advanced Diploma within the last ten (10) years are eligible to be considered for admission and may be eligible for advanced standing. Applicants who have successfully undertaken a minimum of two university units at undergraduate level or higher are eligible to be considered for admission and may apply for advanced standing.
Applicants with any other postsecondary/tertiary studies are invited to contact the Prospective Students' and Admissions Centre about their eligibility for admission to the University.
Competence in English for Admission to Murdoch University
You must achieve a scaled mark of at least 50 in English, TEE English Literature, English as an Additional Language/Dialect (EALD) or an acceptable level of achievement in TEE ESL (at the level determined for the year in which you were enrolled).
English Course, EALD or TEE English Literature sat on a private basis can also be used to meet the University’s competency in English requirement.
You can meet the competence in English requirement with results obtained in any of the previous ten years.
Under some circumstances Murdoch University will concede English competence. These concessions can be found by clicking on Future Students on the Murdoch website at www.murdoch.edu.au.
Personal Statement
A personal statement will always enhance the likelihood of admission for mature aged applicants. It is essential that non-school leaver applicants with fails, late withdrawals or poor academic performance in their postsecondary/tertiary studies submit a Personal Statement to assist their application. The statement should be approximately one A4 page in length and outline the circumstances that led to the poor performance and why those circumstances will not apply to any subsequent studies undertaken at Murdoch University. Some courses require a Personal Statement and if this applies to your preference, it will be indicated in the individual Course Information under Course Search.
Applicants with Qualifications Gained Overseas
Applicants with overseas qualifications are invited to check with the Prospective Students' and Admissions Centre to determine if they are eligible for admission. Applicants will also be required to provide satisfactory evidence of their competence in English via an approved examination. Applicants with qualifications not yet translated into English or assessed as per the Australian Qualifications Framework should contact the Overseas Qualifications Unit.
Alternative Entry
Access South West is an entry pathway aimed at high schools in the
Rockingham and Peel areas of the South West corridor of Perth. It encourages
applications from all students who are enrolled in TEE subjects and who wish
to study at the Rockingham or Peel Campuses of Murdoch University. Assessment is based
on evidence from teaching staff which supports the student’s academic potential;
a letter from the student; and the student’s school and TEE results. For further
information, please contact Student Equity, telephone (08) 9360 6084.
Tertiary Options Project (TOP) is an entry pathway aimed at those students
studying TEE subjects who experience disruption to their final year studies.
This may take the form of family crisis, medical or psychological problems,
disability or other demonstrated disruption, which may lead to poor results
in the final exam. Assessment includes: a personal statement from the student
including reference to the problems experienced; supporting evidence from school
teaching staff which outlines the student’s academic potential; and the student’s
school and TEE results. For further information, please contact Student Equity,
telephone (08) 9360 6084.
Other alternative pathways exist for mature age students. Information is available through Student Equity on (08) 9360 6084.
Portfolio Pathway: Admission through the assessment of a portfolio is available at Murdoch University into the Bachelor of Media Studies (BMedia)- course code MUHMC, the Bachelor of Mass Communication (BMassComm) – course code MUHCC, and the Bachelor of Digital Media (B Digital Media) – course code MUH8C (Interactive Digital Design) and course code MUHGC (Games Art and Design). Applicants apply through TISC but submit their portfolio direct to the Prospective Students’ and Admissions Centre at Murdoch. More information about this entry pathway can be found by clicking on Future Students on the Murdoch University website at www.murdoch.edu.au.
Selection
of Courses
When you list a Murdoch course as a preference,
for most courses you are also indicating your major area of study. A major is
a grouping of coherent units approved by the University's decision making body, Academic Council, leading to an award.
At the time of application through TISC you usually only have the opportunity
to select one major unless you apply for one of the joint degrees listed. However,
information about adding majors is available on the new student website and in enrolment information supplied with your offer. Students wishing to enrol in a highly competitive
course as a second major will be able to apply at the end of the first semester. Careful attention should therefore be given to selection of course preferences.
Remember: Double Majors are possible between most subject areas
at Murdoch University (eg Biological Sciences and Marine Science, or Asian Studies
and Politics and International Studies). If you do want to undertake a Double
Major, you only need apply for the FIRST Major through TISC. The second can
be added either when you first enrol at Murdoch, or during the course of your
degree.
Part-Time Study
The majority of undergraduate classes at Murdoch University
are held during normal business hours. Part-time study at Murdoch University
does not refer to attendance at evening classes. Part-time students enrol in
fewer units per semester than full-time students, but attend the same classes in the units in which they are enrolled.
External
Study
If a Murdoch University course is listed with a Method of Study of 'E',
it means that the course may be completed wholly off-campus (ie students are
not required to attend classes on-campus), unless the course information entry
for that course indicates an exception. External units use a combination of hard copy and ICT (Information and Communication Technology) to communicate with students during their enrolment in external units. Where units are available externally, students can enrol in a mix of external and internal units to suit their lifestyle at any particular time.

Admissions
Quotas
There are quotas on all courses of study. The most restricted, and therefore for which entry
is expected to be most competitive are Law, Veterinary Science,
Chiropractic Science and Psychology. Although certain courses can be
added as a second major at initial enrolment, it is not possible to enrol in
some courses unless you have been offered a place in them. However, it will be
possible to apply to transfer at the end of the first semester of study.
Deferred
Admission
Successful applicants who have been offered a place of study may apply to defer
admission for one year. If deferral is approved, students will be invited to enrol for the 2010 academic year in October 2009. A place of study for that same course will only
be guaranteed for the following year’s admission.
Deferred students will also be contacted by the Prospective Students' and Admissions Centre in March 2009,
therefore it is important that students inform the Prospective Students' Centre
should there be any change of postal address leading up to that time.
