Admission
Requirements
Edith Cowan University welcomes applications from both school leavers and non-school leavers.
While ECU will make every effort to offer applicants a place in their chosen course,
attainment of the minimum entry requirements does not automatically guarantee
a place, particularly where the number of eligible applicants is greater than the number
of places. Where this occurs, offers will be made on a competitive basis.
English Competency Requirements
All applicants seeking admission to undergraduate studies must demonstrate English competency, which can be achieved in a number of ways.
Overseas Qualifications
Provision is made for the recognition of overseas qualifications. For clarification on eligibility please contact ECU Admissions. As per ‘Requirements for University Admissions’, competence in English is required and can be achieved via the Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS), with the minimum acceptable scores being an overall band of 6.0 (no individual band less than 6.0) or a minimum acceptable score of 145 in the Written English test component of the STAT. Please note the following exceptions to the IELTS:A list of other qualifications that may be used to meet the English requirements is available from ECU.
Admission
to Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) Courses
In addition to attaining minimum admission requirements, entry to WAAPA is also dependent upon an audition and/or interview and/or folio presentation of previous work. Applicants must lodge a separate application for their audition/interview directly with the Academy by 30 September 2008 as well as a TISC application for
Music - Classical Performance; Music - Composition; Music - Contemporary; Music - Jazz Performance; Music - Music Studies; Music - Music Technology; Education, Secondary - Music; and/or Arts Management. Applications for the audition/interview can be downloaded from www.waapa.ecu.edu.au or by contacting the WAAPA Admissions Officer by email: waapa@ecu.edu.au, or telephone on (08) 9370 6594.
The submission of an Application for Audition/Interview applies to all students who list a WAAPA course as one of their preferences. Auditions and interviews are normally held between October and December. Applicants who have lodged their Application for Audition/Interview to WAAPA will be contacted to arrange a specific date and time.
Applications for music courses should refer below to 'Music Courses at WAAPA'.
Applications for Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses at WAAPA in Acting, Dance, Classical Music, Jazz, Production and Design, and Bachelor of Arts degrees in Dance and Music Theatre are made directly to WAAPA and not through TISC. For further enquiries contact the WAAPA Admissions Officer.
Music Courses at WAAPA
As per above, in addition to a TISC application, Music and Education (Secondary) – Music applicants must submit an Application for Audition/Interview directly to WAAPA by 30 September 2008. For the Bachelor of Music course at WAAPA, there is a separate TISC code for each stream so you are able to choose more than one stream in order of preference.
Applicants who nominate an ECU music preference and are unsuccessful will automatically be considered for an appropriate Diploma or Certificate level course at WAAPA.
Classical Music auditions are usually held in late October. Auditions in Jazz and Contemporary Music are usually held in early December. Applicants who have lodged their Application for Audition/Interview will be contacted to arrange a specific date and time.
Auditions, Interviews and Examples of Past Work
For some courses, such as the performing or visual arts, fashion and creative industries, satisfactory auditions, interviews or examples of past work are also essential admission requirements. Refer to 'Specific Requirements' within the Course Search information and 'Admission to WA Academy of Performing Arts Courses'.
General Information
Deferral of an OfferSuccessful applicants who have been offered a place may apply to defer admission for up to one year subject to the course being available in the desired academic period. If deferral is approved, you will be contacted by ECU, and provided with information on how to commence your studies in either of the next two semesters. A place of study for the same course and campus will only be guaranteed for the following two semesters, subject to availability. If re-applying through TISC after deferring, you may include other courses or the same course at a different campus as a higher preference than the code of your deferred course. These higher preferences will be considered in competition with other applicants. Admission to the same course but a different campus is not guaranteed. For some courses, such as those from WAAPA, successful applicants will not be able to defer their offer and will be required to reapply.
Part-time
Study
Part-time study does not necessarily refer to attendance at evening classes. Part-time study involves undertaking a lesser load than the normal full-time load. A normal full-time load is 60 credit points of study per semester, for example four units of 15 credit points each.
Off-Campus
Studies
ECU offers off-campus studies that usually incorporate online materials in a limited number of courses. Refer to the individual Course Information under the Course Search facility for courses available in these modes.
Advanced
Standing (Credit)
See Advanced Standing/Credit.
ECU recognises that specific circumstances outside the control of the applicant may occur, which negatively impact on the individual’s ability to successfully prepare for entry to University study.
As a result, applicants who have been impacted by one-off events such as serious medical conditions, family bereavements or accidental injuries can still be considered.
To apply for Special Consideration, individuals will need to lodge their application via the relevant method and provide ECU with a statement and supporting documents outlining the incident.
