Introduction

Edith Cowan University (ECU) is Western Australia's second largest university, offering an extensive variety of courses across a wide range of disciplines to around 23,000 or one-third of the State's university students. Its influence in the international arena has grown rapidly with around 3,000 international students from at least 80 different countries.

ECU is a contemporary university providing quality tertiary education for the students of today. It prides itself on being supportive, flexible and relevant to the real world. ECU’s courses have a strong focus on providing practical solutions to real life problems. Professional practice, industry placements and guest speakers are key features of its programs.

ECU strives to provide a different learning approach, developed to maximise the student outcome and experience. It also provides state-of-the-art facilities with technologically advanced equipment on all of its wirelessly networked campuses.

With more than 300 courses, ECU offers the flexibility and freedom to match each students’ talents and aspirations with a wide range of course options, giving students the skills and knowledge to reach their potential.

Campus Locations

ECU has three metropolitan campuses and a regional campus in the South-West.

Mount Lawley Campus - Only minutes away from Perth's CBD and conveniently serviced by public transport, ECU’s Mount Lawley Campus is an excellent choice for study. Mount Lawley is equipped with extensive teaching resources, first-rate facilities, a new gym and sports centre and on-campus residential accommodation. The Mount Lawley Campus forms part of a precinct with the Mount Lawley Senior High School and is home to one of Australia's most successful arts training institutions, the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA).

Joondalup Campus - ECU’s Joondalup Campus is situated close to fast rail transport and Perth's major freeway. The purpose-built campus boasts state-of-the-art facilities including the Science and Health Building , a multi-million dollar recreation centre and an outdoor cinema during the summer months. On-campus residential accommodation is also available. The campus forms part of a major educational precinct, which includes West Coast TAFE and the Western Australia Police Academy .

Churchlands Campus - ECU’s Churchlands Campus is being gradually redeveloped into a premium residential development. Over 2007 and 2008 the availability of courses offered from Churchlands will decrease as programs move to Joondalup and Mount Lawley.

South West Campus (Bunbury) - Located two hours south of Perth and in Western Australia's second largest city, ECU’s South West Campus (Bunbury) is the largest university campus outside the metropolitan area. The campus is part of an educational precinct comprising the South West Regional College of TAFE and the Bunbury Health Campus, which includes St John of God Hospital and South West Area Health Services. The campus has modern facilities, small class sizes, offers a comprehensive range of courses and has on-campus residential accommodation.

Centres and Regional Areas - Selected ECU programs are offered at a number of metropolitan and regional centres to meet local needs. Centres operate throughout Western Australia including Margaret River and Geraldton.

Admission to Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) Courses

In addition to attaining minimum admission requirements, entry to WAAPA is also dependent upon audition or interview. Applicants must lodge a separate Application for Audition/Interview directly with the Academy by 28 September 2007 as well as a TISC application for Music; Education, Secondary - Music; and Arts Management. Applications for Auditions/Interviews can be downloaded from www.waapa.ecu.edu.au or by contacting the WAAPA Admissions Officer by telephone on (08) 9370 6594 or email waapa@ecu.edu.au. The submission of an Application for Audition/Interview applies to all students who list a WAAPA course as one of their preferences. Interviews and auditions are normally held between October and December and applicants who have lodged their Application for Audition/Interview will be contacted to arrange a specific date and time.

Applications for music courses should refer to Music Courses at WAAPA.

Applications for Certificate, Diploma, and Advanced Diploma courses in the Performing Arts in Acting, Dance, Classical Music, Jazz, Production and Design, and Bachelor of Arts degrees in Dance and Music Theatre are made direct to WAAPA and not through TISC. For further enquiries contact the Admissions Officer on (08) 9370 6594.

Music Courses at WAAPA

If you wish to be considered for classical musical courses at UWA as well as WAAPA you must include the course code for both in your TISC preferences and apply to both institutions.

Applicants who nominate an ECU music preference and are unsuccessful will automatically be considered for an appropriate Diploma or Certificate level course at WAAPA.

Classical Music auditions are usually held in late October. Auditions in Jazz and Contemporary Music are usually held in early December. Applicants who have lodged their Application for Audition/Interview will be contacted to arrange a specific date and time.

TAFE Qualifications

A list of other qualifications that may be used to meet the English requirements is available from ECU.

Alternative Entry Program

Portfolio Entry Pathway
The Portfolio Entry Pathway offers students an additional way to gain entry to university studies at ECU. While students must still meet minimum English Competency (see www.tisc.edu.au ), they can apply on the basis of their school assessed results for ECU approved Common Assessment Framework (CAF) and TEE subjects or Curriculum Council courses. School Leavers wishing to apply via the Portfolio Entry Pathway must submit an application to TISC BUT must submit supporting documentation directly to ECU Admissions. Non-school leavers must submit both their application and supporting documentation directly to ECU Admissions. For information on what supporting documentation is required, go to www.ecugreatcareers.com and select “Entry Pathways” and “Portfolio Entry Pathway”, or contact ECU directly.

University Preparation Course
The University Preparation Course (UPC) is an alternative way to gain entry to university studies at ECU. The UPC involves one semester of full-time study or two semesters of part-time study. UPC graduates who achieve a course average of 50 or above will be eligible for entry into the majority of undergraduate courses at ECU, the exceptions being courses that have additional entry prerequisites (eg. TEE science subject). The University will make every effort to offer UPC graduates a place in their chosen undergraduate course. However, where the number of eligible applicants is greater than the number of Commonwealth Supported places in a course, offers will be made on a competitive basis or, alternatively, a Domestic Fee Paying (DFee) basis.

For information on entry requirements, please refer to the UPC entry via Course Search.

General Information

Deferral of an Offer

Successful applicants who have been offered a place may apply to defer admission for up to one year subject to the course being available in the desired academic period. If deferral is approved, you will be contacted by ECU, and provided with information on how to commence your studies in either of the next two semesters. A place of study for the same course and campus will only be guaranteed for the following two semesters, subject to availability. If re-applying through TISC after deferring, you may include other courses or the same course at a different campus as a higher preference than the code of your deferred course. These higher preferences will be considered in competition with other applicants. Admission to the same course but a different campus is not guaranteed. For some courses, such as those from WAAPA, successful applicants will not be able to defer their offer and will be required to reapply for 2009.

Part-time Study

Part-time study does not necessarily refer to attendance at evening classes. Part-time study involves undertaking a lesser load than the normal full-time load. A normal full-time load is 60 credit points of study per semester, for example four units of 15 credit points each.

Off-Campus Studies

ECU offers off-campus and online studies in a limited number of courses. Refer to the individual Course Information under the Course Search facility for available courses in these modes and for any specific requirements you may need.
